Explore Orange County on the 22-Mile Mountains to Sea Trail

Looking for a scenic way to explore Orange County? The 22-mile Mountains to Sea Trail takes hikers, cyclists and runners from inland canyons and parks all the way to the coast, connecting Anaheim, Orange, Tustin, Irvine and Newport Beach. Along the way, the route passes through Peters Canyon, Irvine parks, the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary and Upper Newport Bay, offering plenty of opportunities to spot birds and other wildlife. You can complete the full trail or choose a shorter section for an easier outing. The journey eventually reaches Balboa Island, where you can finish with lunch or a classic frozen banana by Newport Harbor.

Start the School Year Safely With These Tips for Kids and Parents

A new school year is here, so here are few simple tips that can help keep kids healthy, safe and ready to learn.
Back-to-School Safety Tips:
Schedule a health check: Consider checking that your child’s health needs, school care plans and sports readiness are up to date.
Plan a safe route: Take a little time to review the safest way to and from school and remind children to watch for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
Remember the helmet: Encourage children to wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet every time they ride a bike or e-bike.
Be aware of scooter laws: California law requires motorized scooter riders to be at least 16, have a valid driver’s license or permit, and wear a helmet.
Consider e-bike readiness: Before your child rides an e-bike, consider whether they are comfortable with the speed, traffic and responsibility that come with it.
Review e-bike safety: Talk with your child about traffic rules, avoiding distractions, carrying passengers and other safe riding habits.
Review insurance coverage: If your family has an e-bike, it may be helpful to check your insurance coverage and understand potential responsibilities in the event of an accident.
Take advantage of safety programs: IUSD and Irvine Police offer e-bike safety education, including required workshops for IUSD students who ride e-bikes to school.

Recovering From a Stomach Bug? A Balanced Diet May Be Better Than BRAT

The BRAT diet — bananas, rice, applesauce and toast — is no longer recommended for extended recovery after a stomach bug. UCI Health expert Dr. Shruti Gohil says there is no evidence the limited diet improves vomiting or diarrhea, and following it for more than a day may leave the body without enough nutrients to recover. Instead, she recommends easy-to-digest, nutritious foods such as chicken, eggs, oatmeal and potatoes, with staying hydrated as the top priority.

Start the Week with a Challenging Trek Through Irvine’s Open Space

Join a Monday Morning Super Trek on August 31 from 7–11 a.m. through Quail Hill and Shady Canyon. This challenging, level-4 hike covers 9 miles with 2,000 feet of elevation gain and includes rocky terrain and steep climbs.
