UCI Health Shares What to Know About the Rise in Cyclosporiasis

A gastrointestinal illness called cyclosporiasis is becoming more common across the U.S. this summer, according to UCI Health. The infection can cause watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, bloating, and dehydration, with symptoms that may last or return over several weeks. UCI Health infectious disease expert Dr. Shruti Gohil says the illness can be confirmed with a stool test and is typically treated successfully with a commonly available antibiotic. If symptoms are persistent or severe, it's a good idea to consult a healthcare provider.

Dry Cat Food and Kidney Health: Helpful Information for Cat Owners

Choosing the right food for your cat can feel overwhelming with so much information available online. Veterinary experts share that dry cat food is not a direct cause of kidney or urinary problems, but making sure your cat stays well hydrated is an important part of supporting their overall health.
Dry cat food from reputable manufacturers does not directly cause kidney or urinary tract disease.
Because cats naturally don't drink much water, the extra moisture in wet food may help support bladder and kidney health.
Cats that are already prone to urinary or kidney issues may benefit from additional hydration.
If your cat prefers dry food, your veterinarian may recommend urinary-support formulas, adding water to kibble, or using a pet water fountain to encourage drinking.
Regular annual blood work and urine testing can help monitor kidney health and detect changes early.
Cats with kidney disease may benefit from a veterinarian-recommended kidney-support diet, whether wet or dry, depending on what they will eat consistently.
If you have questions about your cat's diet, your veterinarian can help recommend a nutrition plan that's best suited to your cat's individual needs.
