Tips for a Healthy Brain: Exercise, Diet, and Social Engagement
To maintain a healthy brain as one ages, UCI Health neuropsychologist Hayley B. Kristinsson recommends regular exercise, a heart-healthy diet, managing modifiable risk factors, protecting mental health and social connections, engaging in cognitive exercises, and ensuring quality sleep. While there's no proven way to prevent Alzheimer's or dementia, these lifestyle changes can reduce risks and enhance brain health. Exercise boosts cognitive function, a healthy diet like the MIND diet supports brain health, and social interactions and mental challenges like learning new skills can keep the brain sharp.
