Care Packages for Officers: Support the Irvine PD with Healthy Snacks and Gratitude

The Irvine Rotary is supporting the Irvine Police Department (IPD) through the Irvine PD Care Package Project, which aims to show appreciation for officers working long, demanding shifts. This initiative delivers healthy snacks, hydration, and handwritten thank-yous to officers during their 12-hour shifts.

Free 30-Pound Grocery Food Box Available for Irvine Residents August 14

Irvine residents in need can receive a free 30-pound grocery food box on Thursday, August 14, at Heritage Park Community Center (14301 Yale Ave.).

  • Boxes include dried beans, fresh produce, canned and frozen vegetables, juices, meat, poultry, fish, nuts, dairy, rice, cereal, and pasta.

Orchard Hills Robotics Team Named World Finalists at 2025 VEX Championship

Five Orchard Hills Middle School students — Carlos Alarilla, Edison Chen, Priyaan Chudgar, Tyler Lee, and Arvin Zhou — earned international recognition as World Finalists at the 2025 VEX V5RC World Championship in Dallas, winning their division under coach Kevin Kim. Since its start as a small 2014 summer academy class, the school’s robotics program has grown into a districtwide initiative with 600 students across 65 schools, making Orchard Hills a leading force in competitive robotics.

Sun Protection Matters: Dermatologist's Advice on Preventing Skin Damage

Orange County has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in California, but prevention is within reach.

  • A recent survey found that many young adults are unaware of the risks, with 28% of respondents aged 18-26 not believing suntans cause skin cancer and 37% applying sunscreen only when reminded.

  • UCI Health dermatologist Dr. Melissa Shive advises:

    • daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 30 SPF

    • protective clothing

    • regular skin checks for changes.

Protect Your Pets: Irvine Police Coyote Safety Reminder

Coyotes are most active during dawn and dusk, so the Irvine Police Department advises keeping small pets close and staying alert during morning and evening walks. 

  • Remove any food sources from your yard to help prevent visits.

  • If a coyote enters your backyard, contact the Irvine Police Department’s Animal Services Officers at (949) 724-7000.

UCI Men’s Basketball Reveals 2025-26 Big West Schedule

UC Irvine men's basketball kicks off conference play with Bold Week at the Bren Events Center, hosting UC Riverside (Dec. 4) and CSUN (Dec. 6).

  • The team will then head on a four-game road trip, including stops at CSU Bakersfield and Cal State Fullerton.

  • The season wraps up with four home games, including a finale against UC Davis on Mar. 7.

  • The Big West Championships are set for March 11-14 in Henderson, Nevada.

Arrest Made in Irvine for Burglary, Drug-Related Offenses

Near Post and Shield, Irvine police arrested 40-year-old Kurtis James Dieterich of Placentia after finding him in a parked car with a fake registration tab. Already known to officers from a prior drug arrest, Dieterich was wanted for burglary, receiving stolen property, drug paraphernalia, and drug possession. Additional drugs were found in his car and on him.
