Cat Grooming Tips for a Healthy, Comfortable Coat

Regular grooming helps keep a cat’s coat clean, comfortable and healthy while also giving owners a chance to spot skin problems, parasites or unusual changes early. Grooming needs vary depending on coat type, age and lifestyle.

  • Brush regularly: Long-haired, silky or curly coats may need daily brushing, while short-haired cats can usually be brushed less often.

  • Check the coat daily: Look for tangles, mats, fleas, ticks, lumps or sensitive areas.

  • Choose the right brush: Bristle brushes work well for shorter coats, while long-toothed combs can help with medium and long hair.

  • Handle mats carefully: Gently brush out small tangles. For larger mats, use clippers rather than scissors, or seek help from a groomer or veterinarian.

  • Baths are usually occasional: Most healthy adult cats rarely need bathing. If needed, use shampoo made specifically for cats, not human or baby shampoo.

  • Summer shaving usually isn’t necessary: Most long-haired cats handle warm weather well, though shaving may help cats prone to severe matting or those unable to groom themselves properly.

  • Watch for coat changes: Excessive shedding, dandruff, greasiness or a dull coat can sometimes signal a health issue and may warrant a veterinary visit.
