Small Health Changes Can Make a Big Difference in Stroke Prevention

UCI Health is raising awareness during Stroke Awareness Month by encouraging people to take simple lifestyle steps to lower their stroke risk. Experts say up to 90% of first strokes may be preventable through healthier habits.

  • Stroke is a medical emergency that can cause disability, numbness, memory issues, speech problems, and emotional challenges if not treated quickly.

  • Common stroke risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, atrial fibrillation, sleep apnea, and heavy alcohol use.

  • UCI Health recommends lifestyle changes such as reducing salt intake, following a Mediterranean-style diet, exercising at least 30 minutes daily, drinking enough water, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption.
