Irvine Unveils Ambitious 30-Year Urban Forest Master Plan
Irvine is creating a 30-year master plan for its "urban forest," which includes all trees on private, public, and city properties. Vice Mayor Larry Agran, who previously helped the city plant 500,000 trees, now aims to plant an additional 200,000 trees to combat climate change and support the Climate Action Plan. Proposed methods include repopulating open spaces with native oaks, converting school blacktops or lawns into forested areas, adding more trees to parks, establishing a program for homeowners' associations, planting trees along major roadways, and adding 50,000 trees to the Great Park. Residents are encouraged to participate in a survey to inform the city's plans.
Discover Urban Gardening at the Great Park's Farm + Food Lab
The Farm + Food Lab at the Great Park is an interactive outdoor classroom where visitors can learn about urban gardening and composting. It also supports the community by providing fresh produce to local food pantries. Solutions for Urban Agriculture, the nonprofit behind the lab, is crucial in realizing the Great Park Framework Plan, making agriculture accessible to the community.
