Irvine Voters to Decide Tie-Breaking Council Seat as Campaign Spending Surges

With the April 15 special election approaching, significant outside spending is influencing the race for Irvine’s seventh City Council seat—an appointment expected to break the current 3-3 council deadlock. Former Councilmember Anthony Kuo holds a substantial financial advantage, with over $17,000 raised directly and additional support from political action committees totaling nearly five times that amount. Major contributors include prominent lobbyists, Republican donor groups, and fast-food franchisee coalitions. In contrast, candidate Betty Martinez Franco has raised approximately $11,000, and Dana Cornelius has not reported any fundraising. Kuo’s ballot designation as a “businessman” has also raised questions due to his full-time employment with the county.

Missing Irvine Man Jianhua ShangGuan Found Deceased; No Foul Play Suspected

UPDATE 3/24: Jianhua ShangGuan, a 53-year-old Irvine resident reported missing on March 22, was sadly found deceased in his vehicle in another Orange County city. No foul play is suspected. He was last seen leaving home early that morning, and his silver Toyota RAV4 (CA 9ANG107) was spotted on surveillance at 5:28 a.m. near the Reserve at Orchard Hills. He left behind his wallet and phone, and a handgun was reported missing.

Boost Colon Health with These UCI-Created Recipes and Nutrition Tips

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a timely reminder that prevention starts with both regular screenings and healthy eating. Colonoscopies can catch the disease early, but diet also plays a major role in lowering risk.

  • Experts recommend a low-fat, high-fiber diet filled with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein while limiting red/processed meats, alcohol, and tobacco.

  • UCI Health’s executive chef Jessica VanRoo offers two delicious, colon-friendly recipes: a roasted ratatouille quinoa salad and chicken asparagus bundles with garlic sauce—both rich in nutrients that support gut health and overall wellness.
