Irvine City Council Debates Ethics After Councilmember’s Financial Ties to Korean Chamber President Surface

Councilmember Tammy Kim is under scrutiny for potential pay-to-play politics after directing $5,000 of Irvine City funds to the Korean American Chamber of Commerce (KACCOC) and attempting to allocate an additional $50,000 following a maximum campaign donation from the Chamber’s president, who also hosted a fundraiser for her. The president's donation and the fundraiser coincided with a surge in campaign contributions. While Kim’s $5,000 donation was approved, her proposal for the additional $50,000 from COVID relief funds was rejected due to concerns from other council members. This incident is raising questions about the influence of campaign donations on political actions, especially with a new state law aiming to curb such practices. Irvine is considering strengthening its conflict of interest laws, with a report due in December.Daylight Savings Time Concludes: Set Clocks Back One Hour This Sunday

Drive Awake, Drive Safe: Drowsy Driving Prevention Week Spotlights the Risks of Fatigued Driving

Operating a vehicle while fatigued compromises safety, and to underscore this form of impaired driving, Drowsy Driving Prevention Week is observed each year in early November.
Fatigue behind the wheel poses a serious risk to road safety. Below are five dos and don'ts to help you steer clear of drowsy driving:
What to Do:
Get Adequate Sleep: Ensure you get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night to avoid feeling drowsy during the day. Adjust your schedule if necessary to make sleep a priority.
Take Breaks on Long Trips: If you're driving for an extended period, schedule breaks every two hours or 100 miles. Use this time to get out of the car, stretch, take a short walk, or even take a brief nap if needed.
Use the Buddy System: When possible, drive with a companion who can help keep you awake and can take turns driving with you, especially during long trips.
Recognize the Signs of Drowsiness: Pay attention to signs of drowsiness such as frequent yawning, heavy eyelids, and drifting from your lane. If you notice these signs, pull over to a safe location and take a break.
Consult with a Healthcare Provider: If you have symptoms of a sleep disorder or experience frequent drowsiness despite getting enough sleep, talk to a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
What Not to Do:
Don’t Rely on Short-Term Fixes: Avoid relying on caffeine or other stimulants as a solution. They may temporarily increase alertness but can lead to a crash in energy levels later on.
Don’t Drive at Times When You Would Normally Be Asleep: Your body’s natural circadian rhythms can make you more drowsy at night, especially between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m.
Don’t Ignore Sleep Disorders: Conditions like sleep apnea can severely impact the quality of your sleep and increase the risk of drowsy driving. Do not ignore the signs and consult a professional.
Don’t Drink Alcohol Before Driving: Even small amounts of alcohol can increase drowsiness and impair your driving ability. Avoid any alcohol if you will be driving.
Don’t Push Through the Drowsiness: If you're feeling drowsy, don't try to push through it to reach your destination. It's better to arrive late than not at all.
Remember, drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. It's essential to take it seriously and take proactive steps to ensure you and others on the road remain safe.
