Summer Pet Safety: Easy Ways to Prevent Heatstroke in Dogs and Cats

As the weather grows warmer, here are a few simple ways to help keep your pets safe, comfortable, and cool while reducing the risk of heatstroke.
Tips to help pets stay cool:
Keep water bowls filled with fresh, cool water.
Provide shady, well-ventilated spaces to rest.
Never leave pets in a parked car.
Schedule walks and exercise during cooler morning or evening hours.
Brush and groom pets regularly.
Take extra care with senior pets, flat-faced breeds, overweight pets, and those with heart or lung conditions.
Watch for signs of overheating:
Excessive panting or drooling
Difficulty breathing
Vomiting or diarrhea
Weakness or stumbling
Collapse or seizures
If your pet shows signs of heatstroke, move them to a cool, shaded area, offer cool (not cold) water, use lukewarm wet towels to help lower body temperature, and seek veterinary care.
