Proposed Bills Could Break the 2% Sales Tax Cap: What This Means for Californians

California lawmakers are considering allowing higher local sales tax rates, which could raise the cost of living. Historically, a 2% cap was placed on local sales taxes to prevent excessive burdens on consumers and businesses. Despite this, some areas in California already exceed this cap, with rates up to 10.75%. Proposed bills aim to allow more regions, including Los Angeles County, to surpass this cap. The California Taxpayers Association opposes these hikes, highlighting potential job losses and economic harm. Increased sales taxes could drive businesses away, as they face higher costs, especially in sectors like manufacturing and film. While most states have lower sales tax rates, California's proposed hikes could also raise costs for government agencies. The author, Joan Armenta-Roberts, urges residents to voice their concerns against these potential tax increases.

Is California's Stable Property Tax System at Risk with the New Land Value Tax Proposal?

California has the highest tax rates in many areas but maintains a stable property tax rate due to Prop 13, set in 1978, which caps annual property tax increases at 2%. Assembly member Lee recently proposed AB 362, suggesting a shift to a "land value tax" system. This system would tax the market value of land but not buildings, potentially undermining Prop 13's protections. The goal is to encourage land development, which could lead to commercialization of high-value areas like the coastline. Polls show strong support for Prop 13, with 57% of Californians in a 2018 survey finding it beneficial. A land value tax might result in businesses moving out of California, increasing costs for residents, and reducing job opportunities. Prop 13 currently ensures stable revenue for local governments and schools.

Beware of Phishing Emails: Think Twice Before Clicking Attachments

Cybersecurity Awareness Month acts as a crucial time to refresh and remind ourselves to Be Cautious with Email Attachments.
Phishing Attempt Explanation:
Phishing is a malicious technique used by cybercriminals to deceive individuals into revealing sensitive information, such as passwords or credit card numbers, by posing as a trustworthy entity.
One of the most common methods used in phishing is sending deceptive emails that appear to come from legitimate sources. These emails often contain attachments or links that, when opened or clicked, can install malware on the recipient's device or lead them to fake websites designed to steal their information.
Examples:
1. An email claiming to be from a well-known bank, asking the recipient to open an attached document and verify their account details. The attachment, however, contains malware that can compromise the recipient's computer.
2. An email supposedly from a popular online retailer, stating that there's an issue with a recent order and urging the recipient to click on a link to resolve it. The link directs to a fake website that mimics the retailer's site, aiming to capture login credentials.
Always be cautious with email attachments and verify the sender's identity before interacting with any links or files. If in doubt, contact the supposed sender directly using a known contact method, rather than through the email
