Earwax Buildup: Signs to Watch For and Safe Ways to Remove It

Earwax helps protect your ears, but too much buildup can lead to discomfort, muffled hearing, or other symptoms. Knowing when to seek medical care and how to remove earwax safely can help prevent irritation or injury.

  • 🩺 Visit urgent care if you have severe ear pain, fever, persistent drainage, hearing difficulty, or feel like something is stuck in your ear.

  • 💧 For mild buildup, OTC ear drops or gentle warm-water irrigation with a rubber bulb syringe may help.

  • ❌ Avoid using cotton swabs, hairpins, or ear candles, as they can push wax deeper or damage the ear.

  • 🚨 Seek emergency care if you have severe pain with bloody discharge, which may be a sign of a ruptured eardrum.

  • 👨‍⚕️ Healthcare providers can safely remove impacted earwax using ear drops, a curette, or irrigation, depending on the severity.
