UCI Health Expands with New Outpatient Center, Elevating Local Healthcare
The new five-story, 168,000-square-foot Joe C. Wen & Family Center for Advanced Care, funded by a $20 million donation from Joe C. Wen and his family, is set to enhance healthcare accessibility for coastal and south Orange County residents. Located within the UCI Health โ Irvine medical complex on Jamboree Road, it includes various specialty clinics and is close to the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center & Ambulatory Care and a new Acute Care Hospital.
Services Offered: The center provides a comprehensive range of services for both adults and children in one convenient location, including Audiology, Cardiology, Neurology, Orthopaedics, and many more specialties. It also houses an urgent care center, which is not suitable for emergency situations.
Special Focus Areas:
Center for Autism & Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Offers support for individuals with autism, ADHD, and other disorders.
Center for Childrenโs Health by CHOC: This floor offers primary care, specialty clinics, and rehabilitation services tailored for children, available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Celebration and Access: The opening of this facility marks a significant milestone in local healthcare, bringing over 15 specialties closer to residents.
IUSD Nurses Lead Lifesaving Training as Part of Earthquake Preparedness Month
IUSD nurses held a Stop the Bleed and AED training for employees at the district office as part of the annual nurses training and earthquake preparedness efforts. AEDs and Stop the Bleed kits are available at all school sites and district facilities. The training helps employees handle various emergencies, from injuries to natural disasters, potentially saving lives until first responders arrive. Explore Acres of Sunflowers and Zinnias at Hana Field's Seasonal Opening
Hana Field in Costa Mesa, managed by Tanaka Farms, opens for its 2024 season on May 11th, offering visitors the chance to explore acres of seasonal flowers, including Sunflowers and Zinnias. Located at 427 Anton Boulevard, the field is open on weekends from 10 AM to 5 PM until July 7th. Visitors are advised to bring their own cutting tools and wear closed-toe shoes due to muddy conditions and thick-stemmed flowers. General admission is $10, with flower picking available at an additional cost via a Keepsake Cup.

The final weekend of the 2024 Sunday Master Class Series at the ABT Gillespie School is on May 5. Classes, suitable for Intermediate & Advanced dancers aged 10-20, will be led by notable instructors including former ABT soloist and international guest artists. Training covers various dance forms and techniques. Limited spots available, with prices ranging from $125 for a single Intermediate class to $400 for the full Advanced series.

UC Irvine Sweeps Penn State in NCAA Volleyball Championship Opener
UC Irvine achieved a decisive 3-0 victory over Penn State in the opening round of the NCAA Championship, led by the impressive performance of Hilir Henno, the Big West Player of the Year. Henno recorded a match-high 15 kills and five blocks, showcasing his skills at the net. The match took place at the Walter Pyramid and saw the Anteaters dominating across all sets with scores of 26-24, 25-16, and 25-19. Notably, Henno and Akhil Tangutur played key roles, particularly in the first set where they led a comeback to clinch it 26-24. The second set was highlighted by an 8-1 run that effectively put UCI in control, and they maintained this momentum in the third set, sealing their victory with a final score of 25-19. UCI's win not only demonstrated their superior play but also advanced them to a semifinal match against top-seeded UCLA. This win marks UCI's continued success against Penn State in NCAA tournaments, improving their record to 3-1.
UC Irvine's Kailah McKenzie Named Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week
UC Irvine freshman Kailah McKenzie earned The Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week after standout performances at the Steve Scott Invitational. McKenzie won the high jump with a personal best of 1.77 meters, placing her third in school history and first in The Big West. She also achieved a wind-aided personal best in the long jump with a 6.03m jump, ranking second in the conference. Additionally, McKenzie set a personal record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.20. This marks her first career weekly award and the fourth for the Anteater women this season.

IVC Freshman Doubles Tennis Team Clinches Title at Ojai Championships
The Irvine Valley College men's tennis team had a successful weekend at the Ojai and 3C2A Championships. Freshman doubles team Nick Grove and Luciano Pardo from IVC won the title, defeating Adam Ridaoui and Lance Morgan from Glendale with scores of 7-5, 6-7, 7-5. The match featured short, powerful rallies, leading Grove and Pardo to victory. Their performance contributed to IVC's 11-2 overall record and a conference win (8-0). Although IVC reached the So. Cal. Regional semifinals, they were defeated by Glendale 5-2. Grove also made it to the singles semifinals but was bested by Sebastian Junghanns. The victories of Grove and Pardo place them among notable IVC champions such as Javier Callejo, Bruno Figlia, Scott Paz, Valentin Baize, Maxime Rumeau, Arthur Bellegy, and Kiichi Ishida.

University High Secures CIF Playoff Spot with Thrilling Extra-Inning Victory Over Woodbridge
University High School's baseball team advanced to the CIF playoffs for the first time since 2012 after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Woodbridge in nine innings. The win in the last Pacific Coast League game, held at Ryan Lemmon Stadium, was crucial as University needed to win their final four PCL games to qualify, successfully doing so. The game featured standout performances, including a game-winning two-run double by Blaine Anderson in the ninth inning. The seniors, particularly eight of them, celebrated this significant achievement after years of close calls.

Suspects Caught: Charges Filed in Irvine Car Burglary Case
Two suspects, initially wanted for stealing belongings from an unlocked car and attempting credit card fraud, have been identified and charged with assistance from a neighboring police agency. Their attempted fraudulent transactions occurred earlier this month in Tustin but were unsuccessful due to card declines. Irvine Police had distributed information about the suspects and their vehicle, urging public assistance.
