Understanding Parkinson’s Disease: The Importance of Early Diagnosis and Comprehensive Care
Parkinson’s is the world’s fastest-growing neurological disorder, affecting 10 million people globally. While there’s no cure or way to stop its progression, early diagnosis is crucial for managing symptoms and accessing optimal treatments, including clinical trials.
UCI Health neurologist Dr. Claire Henchcliffe emphasizes that understanding the disease helps patients navigate symptoms and seek timely intervention, which can prevent further disability.
Parkinson’s affects movement through dopamine loss in the brain, with symptoms like tremors, coordination issues, and rigidity.
Factors such as age, genetics, and lifestyle can influence progression. While no proven methods exist to slow the disease, exercise, healthy diets, and emerging therapies offer hope.
Resources like the Parkinson’s Foundation and Michael J. Fox Foundation provide vital support for patients and their families.
Plant Native, Protect Nature: IRC’s Guide to Responsible Gardening
A beautiful plant isn’t always a beneficial one! Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) encourages the use of native plants to support the restoration of Orange County’s wildlands and protect local ecosystems.
Non-native species, such as Pampas Grass, Fountain Grass, and Olive Trees, can spread rapidly, outcompete native plants, and disrupt natural habitats.
Native plants, however, are water-efficient, prevent erosion, and provide vital food and shelter for local wildlife—all while being easier to maintain.
For native plant options, visit local nurseries like Tree of Life Nursery or Roger’s Gardens, and explore resources like CalScape.

Give a Senior Pet a Second Chance—And Find a New Best Friend
Seniors Helping Seniors Program: The Irvine Animal Care Center waives adoption fees for individuals 62+ who adopt senior pets, though licensing fees may still apply. Senior pets, often from previous homes, face stress in shelters, making timely adoptions vital. These animals are typically housebroken and lower energy, offering ideal companionship for seniors. Look for the green "senior" stamp on kennel cards. Call 949-724-7740 for more details.
