Irvine Special Election Candidate Faces Residency Lawsuit

Irvine’s special election is facing legal scrutiny as former Councilwoman Tammy Kim is accused of misrepresenting her residency in the 5th District. A lawsuit filed by former mayoral candidate Ron Scolesdang alleges Kim primarily resides in District 3, citing findings from a private investigator. Kim denies the claim, stating she moved to a rental in District 5 due to security concerns. Despite the lawsuit, City Manager Oliver Chi confirmed Kim remains on the ballot, with a court hearing set for Thursday. The election, triggered by Mayor Larry Agran’s 2024 victory, is Irvine’s first under district-based voting, with ballots going out March 17. Other candidates include former Councilman Anthony Kuo, Woodbridge HOA Board Member Dana Cornelius, and PR consultant Betty Martinez Franco. The election is expected to impact the city council’s balance of power, which has faced frequent deadlocks.
