Stay Safe in the Surf: Injury Prevention Tips for Surfers of All Ages

Surfing is a fun way to stay active and enjoy the ocean, but it also comes with risks ranging from cuts and shoulder strain to concussions and sun damage. The good news is that many common surf injuries can be prevented by knowing your limits, using proper technique, staying aware of ocean conditions, and taking simple safety precautions before you paddle out.

  • Surf within your skill level: Beginners, children, surfers in crowded conditions, and those attempting waves beyond their abilities face a higher risk of injury.

  • Respect the ocean: Swim at beaches with lifeguards, understand rip currents, and if caught in one, stay calm and swim parallel to shore until you're free.

  • Protect your head: Concussions can happen from hitting your board, the seafloor, or another surfer. Return to surfing gradually and only after medical clearance.

  • Prevent board-related injuries: Keep a safe distance from others, avoid crowded breaks, use beginner-friendly board guards, and learn how to wipe out safely.

  • Take care of your shoulders and knees: Use efficient paddling technique, strengthen supporting muscles, stretch regularly, and build up slowly to more advanced maneuvers.

  • Look after your ears: Surf-specific earplugs, drying your ears after sessions, and avoiding aggressive ear cleaning can help prevent surfer's ear and infections.

  • Don't forget sun protection: Wear SPF 30โ€“50 sunscreen, reapply often, use UV-protective clothing, and limit exposure during peak sun hours.
