2 Arrested - The Tale of Catalytic Converter Theft

Last month, two individuals swiped catalytic converters from cars at the Spectrum Center. With the help of the Spectrum Team, the Auto Theft Detectives identified and arrested the duo. Eva Drulhe, 24, was arrested today, while her accomplice was nabbed over the weekend during a car chase with another police department. Drulhe, who seemingly isn't fond of the police as hinted by her attire, is now facing charges of grand theft and conspiracy in Orange County.

Catalytic Converter Thefts On The Rise

According to data from CARFAX, as many as 153,000 catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles across the United States in 2022

The surge in catalytic converter thefts is linked to the high market value of precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium found within them. Thieves quickly remove converters from parked cars, selling them for several hundred dollars each. The thefts leave vehicle owners with costly replacements in many cases costing a few thousand dollars to replace..

Law enforcement and auto repair shops are advocating for preventive measures like engraving VIN on converters, installing protective cages, and employing surveillance systems to deter theft and aid in recovering stolen items. The rising thefts highlight the unintended fallout from market dynamics, prompting collective efforts to curb this growing menace.
